Costa Compost Revolution image

Costa the Composter

A philosopher once mused “The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” Truer words were never spoken when it comes to the growing garden ideology of composting.

Creating your own organic fertiliser is easy as long as you do it right. To encourage you to DIY, we welcome you to join The Compost Revolution and get your hands dirty on Saturday May 12 – the final day of International Compost Awareness Week.

Leading the charge is Costa Georgiadis, host of the ABC’s Gardening Australia program and International Compost Awareness Week ambassador, with an interactive experience at the market alongside propagating patrons.

BFM 1st Birthday Invitation

One Year Young!

You are invited to the party this Saturday April 28! A year ago something very special happened. The seed was sewn for a Farmers Market on a mission to bring Bondi fresh food with a weekly community experience. Since then it has grown to become a favourite event among locals and visitors alike in the seaside suburb with a hunger for produce and products all fresh…from the Country to the Coast, from the Bush to the Beach.

Many activities will be taking place on our special day including the City Chicks petting farm, face painting and balloon art for the kids. Adults get to have their fun as well with a birthday banana bread, raw food demonstrations, entertainment and workshops…with even more activities to be announced later in the week.

We are also seeking support for the market to grow further for an even better shopping experience. You can help so read on to find out how…

Lee Holmes Headshot 2

Holmes is where the heart is

We can all agree that food is important. Food choices are just as important for your body to function efficiently and ward off infection. But what happens when the very source of nutrition you consume actually works against your system? While some doubters mock their friends seeking a Lactose free smoothie or gluten free muffin, it is no laughing matter. Food allergies are not a choice but a daily battle. Many are diagnosed in their teens or later, meaning they have grown fond of flavours found in food that cause them pain. Some unfortunate people contract life threatening diseases that turn their entire lives upside down and must change what they cook and consume.

Lee Holmes knows these stories well. As an advocate for a natural health and a whole foods lifestyle, she recently released the “Supercharged Food” cookbook.  This Saturday April 21, Lee can be found selling her book, signing copies and giving patrons a taste of her new ‘Activated’ nut range. To whet your appetite, we talk turkey with Lee to get a taste of her slice of life…

Honeycomb with 2 Bees

Honey? I’m Home!

John Smith is a rural romantic in the sweetest sense. As a honey harvester, his life is all about the blissfully buzzy business of bustling bees.

With dozens of honey types and flavours available, he refuses to choose a favourite…instead offering a poetic perspective “My favourite honey is whatever I am having right now-as I consider ALL honey from any flower to be a precious and perfect materialisation of the environment from which it came. The multitudes and varieties of plants ensure that the ones best suited to the occasion will produce the flowers. The bees decide which flower is producing the most desirable nectar-making that sample of honey virtually a perfect encapsulation of that moment”

The relationship a farmer has with their crop runs deeper than commerce…the long-term love of the rich nectar gives John the biggest gold rush of all.

Local Harvest vs Supermarket Wars

In the last few years, rival supermarkets have secured their ‘two-party’ type stronghold over shoppers with price wars on particular items. It began with bread, then milk and more recently the shopping giants have set their sights on Australia’s precious produce.

Megamarts may offer cheap, but discerning patrons prefer their food be real, ripe and ready to eat. But how do you encourage friends and family to adopt your ‘eat fresh’ ethos while understanding the need for convenience? Indeed, what happens when your Bondi Farmers Market supplies have run dry and you cannot wait until Saturday?

Local Harvest is an online resource which directs you toward outlets and businesses who can provide the goods! Get online and get involved as April 1- 7, you are invited to take up the Local Harvest Challenge and be the true deciders of where our food originates…

Kitchen Garden

Grow it Local

Feeling like there’s never enough hours in the day anymore? You’re spot on as this week marks the March equinox…and as night-times take a longer nap the vegetables do anything BUT veg out. Most produce works the nightshift…hence why many plants are best when watered at dusk.

If you want proof – why not grow it yourself?

As the swell for sustainable, fresh and organic supplies increase in intensity, some bright sparks have come up with a novel way of harnessing the fervour.

‘Grow It Local’ is a community of seasoned growers and brand new gardeners whose purpose is to share gardening and cooking tips.
